Major regeneration projects in London

Stratford
The Stratford City is the largest retail-led, mixed use urban regeneration project ever undertaken in the UK it will also host the Olympic games in 2012.
It will include:
- Commercial development: 460,000 sq. m. of office space, including a cluster of towers of 50 and 30 floors, to attract major UK and European businesses.
- Westfield shopping centre: 150,000 sq. m. of retail and leisure space, including three large department stores, around 200 retail outlets, high street shops, restaurants, café’s and bars, a large cinema complex, an arts and cultural centre and health and fitness clubs, as well as nightclubs and other facilities. The retail element will become the third most important retail centre in London after the West End and Knightsbridge shopping districts in the city centre.
- 120,000 square meters of hotel and conference space will be developed around the Euro star International Station.
- Over 13 hectares of squares, public gardens, parks, natural and ecological habitats, and water features, including the Cascades, a series of stepped lakes with quiet waterfalls between them with a total area of 13,500 square meters.

Thames Gateway
The Thames Gateway is an area of land stretching 40 miles east from inner East London on both sides of the River Thames and the Thames Estuary. The area, which includes much brownfield land, has been designated a national priority for urban regeneration. In London, much of this regeneration is being managed by the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC), which works with the Greater London Authority, the London Development Agency and the London boroughs included in the area. These are Barking and Dagenham, Bexley, Havering, Lewisham, Greenwich, Newham and Tower Hamlets. The LTGDC facilitates implementation plans to accelerate the regeneration of town centres, commercial sites, housing and services to improve the quality of life for people living and working in the area.

Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL)
This includes the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link service into St Pancras and extension of the existing station. In 2007, the international terminus at St Pancras will open to provide high-speed Eurostar connections to the continent followed by quick links to Stratford and Kent. The Station, situated wholly within Camden, is currently being transformed and extended ready for the start of Eurostar services.
Kings Cross/St Pancras will play a key role in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games becoming the hub for the Olympic Javelin service, which will whisk visitors to the Olympic Park in just seven minutes.

King cross
King's Cross St Pancras. King's Cross is undergoing one of the largest and most complex programmes of planning and development-led regeneration in Europe. There are a number of major projects currently underway or at the planning stages. By 2020, an estimated 60 million passengers a year will pass through the King's Cross transport interchange - almost the same number of passengers as those currently passing through Heathrow airport.
The Channel Tunnel rail link into St Pancras is now complete, but construction of a new Thameslink station continues and the expansion of King's Cross St Pancras underground station. King's Cross St Pancras will play a key role in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as it will provide the hub for the Olympic Javelin service, taking visitors to the Olympic Park in just seven minutes.
After construction of the CTRL, the surrounding lands between the stations could become one of the largest mixed-use brown-field redevelopment’s in the UK. Situated to the north and between the two stations and sited mainly in Camden, this £2 billion new urban quarter would have a major impact on numerous areas sorrounding the station.

Central London
Paternoster Square. This is a mixed use development of over a million square feet which is set to become a new focus for the business community in the City of London. Many major businesses such as Goldman Sachs International, the London Stock Exchange and CB Richard Ellis are located on the site itself.
Merrill Lynch's new European headquarters are across the road on Newgate Street. On completion, it is anticipated that the new workforce in this area will be more than 10,000.

North London
Wembley. The new national stadium at Wembley has become the focal point for the regeneration of the entire area. The London Borough of Brent and a private developer are working together on numerous mixed-use development projects covering some 50 acres of land surrounding the stadium.
The development will create new jobs, homes, leisure facilities, shops, bars, restaurants, offices, a hotel and a major new public space.

West London
Shepherds Bush. This enormous new shopping centre in Shepherd's Bush is the size of 30 football pitches. It boasts 265 shops, 50 food outlets, an undulating glass roof that could cover Wembley Stadium and the first new underground station to be built on an existing line in 70 years.
Work around the centre continues, including a revamp for Shepherd's Bush Green and a new library. The surrounding areas are being regenerated in correlation to the fully developed shopping centre.

South London
Croydon Gateway. This is a project to redevelop a block of land between East Croydon railway station and the town centre. At 12.36 acres, the site has the potential to provide a new focal point for Croydon.
It is attracting further investment and creating a catalyst for the regeneration of the whole area. It is part of the Croydon Vision 2020 regeneration scheme.

Elephant and Castle.
Extensive redevelopment is planned for this area, budgeted at £1.5 billion. A development framework was approved by Southwark Council . It covers an area of 170 acres and envisages restoring the Elephant and Castle to the role of major urban hub for inner South London which it occupied before World War II.
Planned features include 800,000 square feet of retail space, five new open spaces, an integrated public transport hub and a new library.

South East London
Erith Western Gateway. The redevelopment of obsolete and run-down riverside industrial areas in Erith has already started to create a climate that is attracting private sector investment.
The plan is to revitalise the town with a new civic heart, create new homes and jobs, consolidate and expand the retail offering and maximise the recreational potential of the river. Bexley council is also keen to see a new use for Erith Quarry, a former quarry site in private ownership.

Crossrail
Crossrail is a new railway project for London and South East England. The aim is to deliver a world-class, affordable railway with a high frequency, convenient and accessible train service across the capital from 2017.
When Crossrail opens in 2017 it will increase London's public transport network capacity by 10 per cent.
This will support regeneration across the capital and help to secure London's position as a world leading financial centre.
Crossrail will cut journey times across London. It is estimated in that Crossrail could benefit the UK economy by as much as £30 billion.
